Clayoquot Wilderness Resort
Camping. There’s nothing worse…

July 6, 2011

My brothers and I went to Prep School at nine and remained at boarding school until we were seventeen. Every summer term without fail we were taken on a week's expedition, which would always include days of hiking in the Scottish Highlands, eating cold canned foods, bathing in rivers if we were lucky, then setting up camp every evening, digging holes for bathrooms and waste products, and finally climbing into damp sleeping bags which just got more horrible and smelly as the week went on. When I left school,  I vowed I would never sleep in a tent again and other than a terrible weekend in the Wisconsin Dells (don't even ask) I have stayed true to my word. That was until I was asked to reconsider, and experience a few days in Canada at Clayoquot Wilderness Resort.

Clayoquot is a one hour seaplane ride from Vancouver and the whole experience is easy. Everything including seaplane transfers, accommodation, meals, alcohol, massage treatments and activities are included in the rate. We love this as it makes budgeting easy and means that there will be no surprises at the end of your stay. We also love the way the property personalizes every experience. You don't have to sign up for anything, instead your Activities Director will ask you what you would like to do and the list of options is endless. So if you want to ride, kayak, hike, fish, climb, zip line, mountain bike or even spend the day bear watching, all you have to do is ask. When you are not experiencing the outdoors, Chef Ryan Orr will whet your appetite with the freshest fish, poultry and local game meats available. It's all good here and there are no damp sleeping bags to look forward to at the end of every day!

GBB Says: Clayoquot is not camping as we remember it, thank goodness. Instead, it's probably the most fun any family or couple could have together in a remote location, yet with all the comforts of home. So book one of the twelve tents with en-suite bathrooms, decide when you want to go between May and September, and have the best time of your life.
